Glasgow's a-go-go!

Excitingly, it's only a week now till new pop upstarts Golden Grrrls launch their debut lp at Stereo.  It feels like it's been a long time coming but on the evidence of their fizzing singles and the two tracks on the lp's bandcamp page, it's going to be an essential purchase that'll take some shifting from my turntable.  Support comes from Joan Sweeney's (of Aggi Doom) new group Seconds and Manchester's saucily named (blush!) but brilliant Sex Hands.  Unmissable!

The following weekend, a new pop night, All The Rage at Blackfriars, will fill the void left by National Pop League's departure a few years back.  With such a fine list of groups listed on its flyer, attendance for all pop minded Glaswegians is mandatory.  Best buff up yr dancing shoes, then!

Sacred Paws

There's an art to tagging songs on bandcamp.  You don't want to make them too dull/literal but you certainly don't want to make them too wacky.  You don't want them to pigeonhole your group nor do you want them to sound like a needy attempt to win cool points by associating your group with a bunch of hip genres.  It's a conundrum, for sure.  Sacred Paws sidestep these traps by tagging their brilliant "i n s t r u m e n t a l ((DEMO))" as "devotional freak out Glasgow".  Having seen them twice in the last week "devotional" is apt as their insistent, highlife resonant guitar shapes and punk rhythms induce a kind of shamanistic dance trance as your brain empties of all its workaday nonsense and focuses on just moving in time.  Sacred Paws is two thirds of Golden Grrrls - Eilidh Rodgers and Rachel Aggs (also of the wonderful Trash Kit) - and despite being only a year into their existence they already have enough memorable songs to send most of their more established peers back to the drawing board.  Their first release is a split tape/download (Comfort On A Tightrope) with Hannah Lew of Grass Widow.  Sacred Paws' songs are roughly recorded but diamonds all the same.  Hannah Lew covers The Mantles' much revered "Don't Lie".  Get on it!  Oh, and should they come anywhere near your house, you must make the effort to see them live.

Sea Lions / Golden Grrrls / Aggi Doom at Mono, Glasgow

What a bill! Were I still a teenage popkid, the names Sea Lions, Golden Grrrls and Aggi Doom would surely be scrawled extravagantly on the anaglypta covering this year's school jotters so the line-up for next Wednesday's (11th, July) gig at Mono couldn't come with a stronger endorsement from me. Sea Lions' righteously jangling debut lp on Slumberland occupied one of the top slots in Not Unloved's best of 2011 list and both Golden Grrrls and Aggi Doom have had the thumbs up on this blog in the past. If you can't be in Glasgow to dig the new breed, maybe one of Sea Lions/Golden Grrrls' other dates will suit yr needs:

Golden Grrrls' 7" launch party (Glasgow)

After what feels like an age, Glasgow's Golden Grrrls are set to release their debut 7".  Watching them develop across a bunch of live appearances over the last couple of years has been fascinating and, on the evidence of "Date It", they've upped their pop quotient considerably compared to those early, amped-up shows.  It's particularly pleasing to hear that they now have the confidence to give their vocals that bit more prominence in the mix. Roll on the 26th!
